The Togogos

OUR PURPOSE
Togogos work to raise awareness about the lasting impact of HIV/AIDS in Africa, to raise funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) (in particular, their support of African grandmothers raising their grandchildren orphaned by HIV/AIDS), and to advocate with our government for a more socially and environmentally protected world. Anyone who wants to help is welcome at our monthly meetings. There’s a lot to do!

WHERE OUR FUNDRAISING DOLLARS GO
All net proceeds from our fundraising efforts go directly to the SLF who provide food, school uniforms, health care, grief counselling, community-building skills training, and field workers to support sub-Saharan grandmothers in meeting the many challenges facing them.
Our special fundraising projects have included speaker events (e.g., Sally Armstrong, Tanya Talaga, Steve Paikin, Margaret MacMillan), online book exchanges, concerts, and holiday treats and goodies sales. Since our inception in 2006 to year end 2021, Togogos have raised over $150,000 to help grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa.

ADVOCACY
Togogos advocate vigorously with our federal government to ensure that Canada does all it can to alleviate the devastating impacts of HIV/AIDS in Africa and to end social and environmental exploitation by Canadian mining companies.

OUR NETWORK
Togogos are one of more than 200 groups across Canada involving hundreds of grandmothers and “grand-others”. We are part of the SLF Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign which raises funds for work in sub-Saharan Africa.
